There's a mark forums as read button on the top right just below the logout lab.

I'd like to have a different system.. :3
ie: the forum should allow the user to select what forums the system will alert there's "unread topics"

It's called ignoring the red (unread) icons on forums that you don't care about.

Not really, the forum should please everyone to read what they want, they shouldn't have the work to filter unwanted mesagens.
