Internet troubles

Postby RESTLESS » Wed Apr 24, 2013 6:09 pm

Hello today I recently got a new modem and cable box for my broadband internet. Upon setting it up and activating the new modem and cable box the internet seemed to be working since it connected to my girlfriends laptop (a macbook im ashamed to say). Since setting up the new modem only her macbook will connect to the internet. Both my laptop which is a dell with vista and my desktop which is a home made computer with windows 7 both connect to the wifi but for some reason will not connect to the internet. It states that the wifi has excellent strength but for some reason simply will not connect. I understand this is suppose to be for ent technical support but I was simply hoping someone with more knowledge on the issue could help me out for I have online classes to attend to as well as my Dota addiction. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Sorry for the dumb question but are your using just a modem which provides the wifi + internet or are you using a modem *to provide the internet* and a router to provide the wifi?

the modem is providing the internet and the router is providing the wi-fi. My internet service provider claims the modem is working fine and that the problem must be with my router which I fail to understand. When looking at my network and sharing center it states that I have connected to the router but I have no internet access. On my girlfriends mac though it worked perfectly instantaneously. Under the device description it says digital internet and voice modem MAC. Which makes me curious if it would for some reason only be compatible with MAC computers?

Also thank anyone who takes the time to help me out I do greatly appreciate it.

What kind of modem and router? And your OS? I'll try to help. I'm a networking major.

Probably you forgot to select the appropriate option to connect the router to your ISP. Which can be PPPoE, Static or Dynamic Address, others.. :3
Read the manual of your router, isn't so hard to undertand C:

Does it work if you try to connect via an ethernet cable?

No it was not working via direct ether net cable either. I just got it figured out today and it seemed that the problem was caused by a malfuncitioning wire which came brand new in the self install box that they sent. While I still do not understand why the MAC connected and not everything else changing out the wire caused everything to work perfectly.

I would like to thank both of you for posting and trying to help me out especially cyberpunk for his speedy reply and quick help.

THANKS ENT I APPRECIATE IT
